[ARCHIVED] Preparedness Starts at Home

image stating September is National Preparedness Month

September is National Preparedness Month, and Schuyler County Public Health is reminding everyone that preparedness starts at home. Take the opportunity this National Preparedness Month to learn how to prepare for emergencies.

“National Preparedness Month is a great time to take small steps to make a big difference in being prepared,” said Schuyler County Public Health Director, Jill Kasprzyk. “Getting yourself, your family, and your home ready for emergencies like home fires, power outages, and floods can make a big difference when the unexpected happens.”

Here are four key actions to take to help be prepared for any disaster:

  1. Know the different types of emergencies that could happen and the appropriate responses to stay safe.
  2. Make a family emergency plan. This plan should include emergency contacts, emergency meeting places, and medical information for each family member.
  3. Build an emergency supply kit. Make sure you have enough food, water, and medicine in case you need to rest in place, and have a go-bag ready if you need to evacuate.
  4. Get involved in your community by taking actions to prepare for emergencies. Simple things like taking a first aid course or volunteering for your local Medical Reserve Corp (MRC) can help you be prepared. Anyone can join the MRC to be ready to help during emergencies or during non-emergency events.

When making your plans, make sure to consider any unique needs of those you care for, including medical conditions, loved ones with disabilities, pets, and any neighbors who might need help getting prepared.
